I never get butterflies before a performance. The worst thing for me is having to wait to get on that stage because I get so impatient. It starts when I pull up to the venue. I always think that we’re told to be there way too early, even though we’re usually rushing to get to the place beforehand. [LOL..that comes with the territory though. As an up and coming artist, we have to go through these things. It's humbling, really. And I'm thankful for that. It keeps us levelheaded. And I love that.] So when we walk in, I survey the performance area then map out my boundaries in my head – how much space we have, what we can and can’t do, etc. Then comes the wait. Ugh. The wait. It sucks. But it’s part of it all.

the RENAISSANCE

Convinced.

Not that I needed convincing.

I’m sure you all have heard of the devastating tropical storm that had recently hit the islands. But hearsay is exactly that—hearsay. Experience and involvement makes the difference. Knowledge and understanding is what brings about truth. A “rebirth” from middle-aged ignorance.

I took it as any other rainy Friday night. Of course I had no intention of going out, I had a plethora of work awaiting my attention. Medical and/or the other. Quizzes. Exams. Practicals. All within the next few weeks. I slept earlier than I normally would with the intention of studying as early as physically possible the next day. I woke up to the sound of rain. I look out the window to see nearly 6 inches of water. Then again, I didn’t wake up as early as I had intended. Nevertheless, I made preparations to study out, since the mere sight of my bed was too painful a temptation. It continued to rain. Now, a foot of water. It was relentless. 2 ft. of water. I had given up on studying out, and began reading.  Then in a matter of minutes, I lost power; no internet, no food that didn’t need heating, no ac, nothing. It kept raining. I was stuck in my dorm room for nearly a day and a half. The water outside was at thigh level. I was hot. I was irritable. I was hungry. Feel bad for me? Don’t. Soon enough the power came back on. Soon enough I was cool, calm, and devouring fried chicken like I’ve never had it before. I turned on the television to maybe catch some basketball. While flipping through, I catch the news. I hear of the devastation. I see the faces.

It doesn’t feel good to be safe in your room with everything you need, knowing you can do nothing to help the people who had lost everything they had.
